Chronic Pain ManagementChronic pain management is something that every person afflicted with fibromyalgia should participate in. It is the process of taking measure and making changes in life to help manage chronic pain. Usually managing pain takes a team effort from you, your doctors, and your family. Most effective chronic pain management regimens consist of a combination of medicine, exercise, and lifestyle changes. This is not to say that you cannot effectively manage pain without all of these things though. Some people are afraid to ask their doctor for help finding a medicine to help manage pain. Most doctors are more than happy to help you find a medication to help. Don't be afraid to tell him if the medicine doesn't help and you need to change medications. Remember that the doctor is working for you, if he won't help you then fire them and go find a better one. Exercise can seem like a massive challenge when you already are in pain. The thought of running or lifting weights usually isn't a possibility for people with bad chronic pain. The important thing to do is stay within your comfort level; overdoing exercise will only make things worse for you. Even if it is something as simple as walking to the mailbox and back, it is better than nothing. For some people just walking to the mailbox is a challenge. As you exercise more you will become more adjusted and be able to tackle bigger challenges. Lifestyle changes, such as changing your diet, are essential to an effective chronic pain management regimen. A good diet will help your body produce natural pain relievers in your body. Monitoring what triggers flares can help you avoid them in the future. Accept that you may not be able to do everything you could in the past. Chronic pain is debilitating and limits what you are able to accomplish. Instead of looking at this as a negative thing, use it as an excuse to develop talents that you are able to do! An effective pain management regimen can be developed without changing who you are. Remember that you have fibromyalgia, it doesn't have you. |
