How Many People Suffer From Fibromyalgia

How many people suffer from fibromyalgia may be debatable. Two to four percent of the population is affected. The most commonly affected group is women over 30. However, there are similar symptoms for other conditions. Polymyalgia rheumatic, myofascial pain syndrome and chronic fatigue syndrome have some of the same symptoms. As well, hypothyroidism, lupus sarcoidosis and rheumatoid arthritis are similar as well.

There is no cure for fibromyalgia and 44% of suffers can become disabled. Symptoms of fibromyalgia can be chronic pain over most of the body, sleep disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic headaches and jaw and face pain. Since there is no cure, it is wise to develop a treatment plan. Get rid of stress, adopt an exercise routine and try alternative therapies such as acupuncture, massage and cognitive behavioral therapy. Myofascial release therapy “works to stretch, lengthen, soften and realign connective tissue to ease pain.” Chiropractic treatments and supplements can help relieve symptoms.

Testing for fibromyalgia is done by touching the 18 trigger points on the body and if 11 of those are tender, it is determined you have fibromyalgia. To find those points, visit http://yourtotalhealth.ivillage.com/test-your-tender-points.html. Avoiding caffeine and alcohol may help with symptoms. As well, adopt a sleep routine with same time to bed and same time to rise. When you are interrupted during the deepest levels of sleep, this can cause the onset of fibromyalgia symptoms. If exercise relaxes you, it will help you fall asleep easier. However, if it stimulates you, exercise three hours before retiring. Fibromyalgia is the most common cause of chronic pain.
