Fibromyalgia: Past and Present

Fibromyalgia was first recognized in the early 1800s. At that time, it was called muscular rheumatism. In the early 1900s, the diagnosis of muscular rheumatism was changed to fibrositis. Finally, in 1976, the condition formerly known as fibrositis got a new name: fibromyalgia. Although the name changed, the symptoms remained the same. These include muscle stiffness, aches, pains, and tiredness along with insomnia.

While at one time doctors classified fibromyalgia as a mental illness, it is now understood that fibromyalgia is a very real syndrome. In addition to pain, you may have intestinal disorders, numbness and tingling, muscle twitches, or bladder problems. Today, the diagnosis of fibromyalgia is based on criteria established by the American College of Rheumatology, and you may choose to see a rheumatologist for treatment. You could also choose to see a doctor that specializes in pain management. Your family physician may also be able to treat you effectively.

To be diagnosed with fibromyalgia, you must have had pain throughout your body that lasts more than three months, and the pain must be on both sides of your body, as well as above and below your waist. You must also have multiple tender points, with at least 11 of 18 places identified when about 8 1/2 pounds of pressure is applied. There is no cure for fibromyalgia, but the symptoms can be successfully treated with medication, exercise, physical therapy, or massage therapy. Your doctor may also treat your other symptoms individually. You have to remember that others have the same symptoms. You are not alone.
