Because the cause of fibromyalgia is unknown, unfortunately there is no known way to prevent the illness. Fibromyalgia is actually a syndrome, not a disease and is sometimes referred to as “FMS”. A syndrome includes signs, symptoms and medical problems that, while occurring together, do not relate to a specific cause. FMS is not life-threatening, nor does it cause any damage to body tissues. Managing FMS can be successful in many cases.
The symptoms of FMS are aching of the entire body, including muscles, bones, and the connecting tissues of the body. Patients also suffer from sleep disturbances and general fatigue. The symptoms are very similar to a flu that affects the whole body, though without the cough, sneeze, and runny nose, but the other symptoms do not ever clear up. Therefore, presenting any of these symptoms could be, but are not necessarily, FMS. In addition, stress, depression, and other mental health problems have been found to contribute to FMS in certain circumstances. Medical science continues to search for the cause or causes of FMS, such as heredity or possibly a gene that is the basis for the illness.
Because there is no known prevention for FMS, it is highly recommended that one be as healthy as humanly possible. Living a life that is as stress-free as possible, eating a well-balanced, nutritious diet, investigating and including certain vitamins and dietary supplements, exercising regularly, and sleeping well are all good rules to follow to prevent any serious medical condition, including FMS.
