There is no cure for fibromyalgia, a painful condition that afflicts millions of Americans. Chronic fatigue and arthritis are common symptoms. There are, however, a number of strategies that can prevent fibromyalgia, or at least reduce the number of flare ups if you already have it.
Reduce stress in your life. If you have a high-stress job, try to work with your employer to make it less so, perhaps by delegating some of your responsibilities. If that isn't possible, consider looking for a less-stressful position. Seek support from your family and friends. Daily meditation and massage may help to minimize stress. Find a hobby you can enjoy on a daily basis. Play with your pet. Embrace monotony; a structured and scheduled life with sufficient sleep, proper nutrition and exercise can better prepare your body to deal with unavoidable stress.
Eliminate processed foods. Learn how to cook with wholesome, unprocessed foods, and eat a blander, more balanced diet. Stop drinking soda and juice, which are full of sugar. Don't drink alcohol.
Moderate exercise will help. Go on a daily walk, take up yoga, try swimming or bicycling. Whatever you enjoy, as long as it's not too strenuous, since that may trigger a flare up.
Quit smoking. It doesn't really help with reducing stress and is bad for your health.
Some people find that using magnesium supplements helps with preventing flare ups.
Overall, a healthy lifestyle with a minimum of stress is your best defense against fibromyalgia.
