Weather and Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia falls into the same category as arthritis and is monitored by the Arthritis Foundation. It dates as far back as the 196’s that the term Fibromyalgia was related to Arthritis. Research was being done as far back as then on how weather affects a person suffering from arthritis.

It has been a well known fact throughout the years that weather, especially such things as humidity, extreme heat or cold and the barometric pressure affects persons that suffer from either Arthritis or Fibromyalgia.

Since Fibromyalgia and Arthritis seem to go hand in hand, many of the symptoms one suffers is often the same. Many that suffer from Fibromyalgia also have difficulty with aching muscles, which are called trigger points. Trigger points are specific areas where muscles join together that upon being touched are tender and sometimes painful when touched. Many people find it difficult to function to their maximum ability when it is humid or the barometric pressure drops. It is still unknown why this occurs, but it does in the majority of those that suffer from “Fibro.” People that have this illness also find that they get severe headaches and sometimes migraines from the pressure drop.

Someone with Fibromyalgia also tends to have a hard time getting in a comfortable position in which to fall asleep and many have to take medications to help them get to sleep. Some also have a hard time staying asleep for more than a few hours at a time, and when they finally get up do not feel as rested as they should.

The most highly recommended treatment known to date for Fibromyalgia is to exercise in order to strengthen the muscles involved.
