Until about 10 years ago scientists thought fibromyalgia only to be psychosomatic. They now say it may be caused by a defect in the pain interpretation of the nervous system. Researchers have also found that there may be a connection to genetics. The prevention of fibromyalgia has proven to be much more involved. It is difficult to separate between the prevention and treatment of fibromyalgia.
Education of fibromyalgia is necessary to make a preventive plan. Achiness, sleeplessness, stiffness, and depression are some of the symptoms. We can assume that to self treat would be the same as to prevent. To formulate an individualized preventive self-treatment plan, you may need to seek the assistance of a healthcare professional, such as your family physician, a rheumatologist, pain management specialist or a psychiatrist.
By eliminating some of the contributing factors, you can move forward into your prevention plan. Since getting a good night’s sleep can be a big contributing factor, you should start there. Establish a regular sleep regime, a set time for going to bed and getting up. You should provide a room without distractions. It is important to have a comfortable mattress. Another important factor is to have a regular exercise program. One that is not too strenuous so as to overwork your muscles, but one that is challenging enough to maintain good muscle tone. Exercise will also help prevent pain and stiffness. Use relaxation techniques to prevent symptoms. One may need to make some adjustments in eating habits as well as in their lifestyle. Good nutrition is of the utmost importance in the prevention of fibromyalgia.
Avoid certain activities that will inflict undesired pain, such as stress and overwork. Stay indoors when weather is intimidating.
