Studies are being performed everyday to try and find out what cause fibromyalgia. Five percent of people in the United States suffer from this muscle disorder. Even though fibromyalgia is not a life threatening disease, it does make daily activity difficult. Some antidepressants have been found to help the symptoms of the disease. Amitriptyline is one of the anti-depressants that seems to work the most effectively, when used in small doses.
Exercise is not a cure for fibromyalgia, but it does help to keep the muscles pliable. A low impact aerobics exercise program done 30 to 60 minutes per day is a good way to fight the pain of fibromyalgia, but you must start out slow. Begin with an aerobics regimen that is about five minutes long and work your way up as you become more fit. Other forms of exercise that can help are swimming, bicycling, and walking.
Some people who suffer from fibromyalgia do not believe that prescription drugs will help them. Many want a more holistic approach to their treatment. Applying a mixture of lavender oil, basil, marjoram, and massage oil on the aching muscles is said to help. When rubbed into the painful areas, it is supposed to alleviate muscle spasms and cramps. Peppermint oil is also a good holistic remedy. Acupuncture is a safe and long standing way to deal with the pain. Needles inserted and set at specific points in the body have been known to greatly decrease pain and stiffness for days or longer.
