Living with Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain disorder. Symptoms include widespread musculoskeletal aches and general overall pain accompanied by stiffness. People with this ailment also experience a tender feel to their soft tissue and may experience sleep problems. Other symptoms may be experienced, from an irritable bladder to restless leg syndrome.

If you suffer from this disease, there are a variety of things you can do to improve your quality of life. Some of the treatments involve using some of the new drugs that block the pain through nerve transmission interruption. This is the new frontier of treatment and is the future of how to treat fibromyalgia. More conventional non-narcotic medicines are often used not only to treat the pain, but to assist with combating depression and restoring normal sleep habits. It is important to deal with the psychological side and assistance is available in group therapy.

Aside from medicines, there are other activities that may offer relief. Many patients have experienced relief by doing water therapy or yoga, while at the same time adding nutritional supplements to their diet. There are certain foods like artificial sweeteners that should be avoided, and reducing your intake of sugary foods or high carbohydrate foods can be very beneficial. It should be noted that there is some evidence that a vegetarian diet consisting of raw whole foods have minimized the pain many suffering patients have to live with each day. Combining these various techniques and possibly exploring acupuncture or chiropractic manipulation may be the key to living more comfortably with fibromyalgia.
