Support for Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a disorder where a person suffers from serious aches and pains all over the body. The areas that are most generally affected are the back, neck, shoulders and hands. Patients experience pain that ranges in intensity throughout their body. An estimated ten million people in the United States have fibromyalgia. Although it affects more women than men, all men, women and children can encounter the disorder.

The National Fibromyalgia Association (NFA) is an organization designed to educate the public. There are support groups in every state throughout the country. If you would like to learn more about the support they have available, you can contact them through the mail or online.

The NFA is designed to encourage and empower the patients and their families that deal with fibromyalgia. In addition to learning through their support groups, you can also join the association and can receive special member benefits such as their quarterly newsletter, Fibromyalgia Awareness Magazine, plus additional benefits. They also host an annual workshop that instructs attendees about fibromyalgia. The 2007 workshop was held in Washington, DC.

There are several support groups that are also available online. These groups offer different types of assistance like wellness blogs, treatment information, a place where patients can write about their own stories and even chat rooms. This is a wonderful opportunity to get some help if you don't want to leave your home.

Of course, the type of support that interests you entirely up to you and your family. You can even test a support group before you join to see what works for you. There are many different types of support groups that are available.
