Fibromyalgia is best described as a condition that causes severe and widespread pain in the muscles, joints and soft tissues. This pain causes an increased sensitivity to even the gentlest touch. This disease is caused by the nervous system's inability to control the stimuli that the body is exposed to. This lack of control makes all normal movements and stimuli to soft tissues, muscles and joints extremely painful.
Even though the pain is severe, no harm is caused to the muscles, tissues or organs. The presence of the fibromyalgia however, can lead to other symptoms. The lack of control by the nervous system can cause depression and a severe drop in energy from your body. Inability to sleep is also common with fibromyalgia as researchers are not sure whether it is a symptom or cause.
Stress also plays a major part in fibromyalgia. Stress is said to worsen the magnitude of the symptoms and their frequencies. This in turn will make it difficult for person suffering from fibromyalgia to participate in everyday situations or events without treatment. If the pain is too severe or the disease is too advanced, treatment will be ineffective.
There are many theories regarding the presence and development of this condition. Doctors are still unsure as to the cause of this disease, but they have drawn the conclusion that it is not contagious and might be genetic. Doctors have yet to find a definite cause or cure. Rest assured, research is still underway. Hopefully treatment for the disease will prove to be more effective.
