Weather and Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia not only causes fatigue, but also causes constant pain. It is associated with many other symptoms like depression, dizziness, and nausea. If you suffer from fibromyalgia, you may notice how your symptoms seem to worsen when the weather changes.

Many fibromyalgia sufferers say the weather does have a direct effect on how they feel. Differences in temperatures, changes in air pressure, and changes in the humidity all cause their pain to increase. Most fibromyalgia sufferers say they feel more fatigued and have more headaches with the change of temperature, and especially change in humidity. Cold weather seems to give them more muscle aches.

Researchers and doctors do not know why fibromyalgia sufferers have worse pain with weather changes, but studies have been done extensively and they do seem to suffer more during cold and humid weather.

Recently, a study was done where fibromyalgia sufferers were studied throughout four distinct seasons. They were asked to tract their pain for twelve months and rate it. After the year was up, they tabulated their results and determined that their pain changed dramatically with the change of the weather. As temperatures fell and barometric pressure increased, their pain increased.

Despite the amount of suffering that people with fibromyalgia go through, there are things they can do to help themselves. Eating right, exercising, and taking supplements to bolster the immune system are all ways in which they can help ease the pain. Keeping warm and dry during damp, cold weather can help to lessen the effects of the weather on the pain.
