Fibromyalgia: Is Prevention Possible?

Currently fibromyalgia (FM) can not be prevented or cured. There are many theories as to the cause, but there is no general agreement. If the cause can be determined, then there will be a better chance for both prevention and cure. Substantial similarities between major depressive disorder (MDD) and FM are present in neuro-endocrine abnormalities and depression. However, as yet, there is no substantiation that MDD and FM are involved in the same underlying construct.

There is some indication that genetics may play a part. Research has shown that FM is associated with polymorphisms of genes in various bodily systems. Yet, there is no proof of a direct connection with FM and polymorphisms. Stress is a contributing factor. Mediation and psychological treatment can be important modalities to help present the disease. Sleep disturbance could explain the "tender points" characteristic of FM. Critics argue that this does not explain slow-onset FM.

The degeneration of dopamine may be a contributing cause of FM. A dopamine medication that selectively stimulates dopamine receptors may be a factor in preventing FM. Other hypotheses include various environmental toxins, viral causes, growth hormone deficiencies, aberrant immune response to intestinal bacteria, silicone leakage in breast implants, vascular dysregulation, and elevation in the cerebrospinal fluid abnormalities.

Whether treatment given after the condition is diagnosed would help prevent the condition is questionable. Most of the drugs require a prescription. Since there is no agreement as to the cause, if one feels at risk, a doctor should be consulted.
